How to begin?
The best way to begin your decorating project is
to ask yourself some questions. What is my budget? What style do
I like? Do I want the room to look bigger? Smaller? More cozy?
Bolder? Softer? Do you want to re-do everything in the room or
keep the same furniture while changing the look and feel? How about
the floor? What features or benefits do I want in a new floor?
What don't I like about my old one? Write it all down to keep it
fresh in your mind. Most of all, think about what pleases you!
After all, you live in the space.
Room Size
Have a small room and want to make it look bigger?
Organization is the key. If you have something in the room that
you have not used for the last year, take it out. Make use of wall
space! Wall shelves can help organize and make a small room look
larger. Accessorize with small, themed items.
Color
Color can make dramatic changes in a room. See how
the two rooms below have the same furniture and accessories? However,
the different color scheme of each makes each room unique. This
is the power of color.
On a Budget
Here are a few inexpensive ways to change the look
of a room.
Area
Rugs: area rugs allow you to add warmth or a bold statement.
You can decorate for the holidays, using seasonal rugs. You can
add color and texture. Area rugs are even being put over carpet
nowadays.
Rearrange the Furniture: There is
a new type of designer in town - the professional home re-arranger.
A home redesigner uses the same furniture pieces and accessories
already found in a home and rearranges them so that they look and
flow better. Just moving the furniture can create a dramatic change.
However, if you are on a tight budget, you may want to give home
rearranging a try yourself.
First, clear the room of all furniture
and accessories. Next, pick a focal point in the room. Is there
a beautiful fireplace? A fantastic view? Is the tv the main attraction?
You want to build your seating and tables around that focal point.
Try angling the furniture, rather than setting it against the wall.
Make sure walkways remain clear. Try different settings and find
the one that works. This can be a challenging, but fun way to redecorate
on a budget.
Don't Forget the Accessories: candles, throw pillows
slipcovers, etc. are all inexpensive ways to change the colors,
look and feel of your room.
Decorate for Yourself
Look at magazines, such as Better Homes and Gardens
and House Beautiful for ideas. You don't have to stick with a certain
style. The idea is to decorate the way you like and have fun doing
it!
